Earth, Wind and Fire’s Drummer, Chef To The Navy SEALS!


Just kidding…Today we chatted with Ralph Johnson, one of the original three members of the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire. The world is lucky he chose music, otherwise who knows, Johnson may have ended up a NAVY Seal, a professional chef, or have found a way to combine the two!

“When people ask me in interview situations ‘If I wasn’t in Earth, Wind & Fire what I would be doing?’, I tell them I would be a gourmet chef or in the military” says Ralph.

“I’m kind of a navy seal nut. I have so much respect for them and what they’re trained to do, they’re well rounded in all that they do”

Southern Roots

“My mother is from the south, so of course we’d be talking about soul food: collard greens, macaroni & cheese, fried chicken or a smothered steak; a little bit of this and a little bit of that.”

“My adventure started by asking my mother and saying ‘how do you do that? So she showed me…”

“On a Friday night I call some of my friends and say ‘Hey, come over to the apartment’. I’d make a lasagna, I make a very excellent lasagna, or sometimes I’d go into the kitchen and make a pot of red beans and some corn bread.  Later on I got a bit more exotic…”

Eggs Benedict ala Ralph Johnson

“Can I tell you my favorite breakfast? I love a good eggs benedict and a mimosa. I can make it myself too…here’s what I do:

I use prosciutto instead of Canadian Bacon but I tell you, you have to watch your hollandaise otherwise it will break on you. After you separate the whites from the yolks and beat all that up and add the lemon juice, you then add maybe a teaspoon to a tablespoon of water into the mixture and put into a double boiler — just start stirring!”

“When you do your hollandaise sauce you can’t walk away from it because it’s like doing a risotto, you gotta constantly stand there and stir, adding broth, more liquid..Oh, by the way, I make an excellent mushroom risotto.”

Chef Around the House

“I watch a lot of Food Network and I’m fascinated by some of the chefs: Emeril, Bobby Flay, Paula Deen, etc. My wife and I will turn on the Food Network on a Saturday morning and watch for a few hours, and then decide what to make for dinner that night. She’s also an excellent cook, though we both do different things”

“Whenever I’m in downtown Denver at the Ritz Carlton I make sure I go there, they really serve some great steaks.”

“It is upscale southern cuisine, they have excellent service and a great ambience. I always go there if I’m in DC. I had a watermelon salad once which was incredible, I was like woah!”

“There are so many places in New York City, it’s the restaurant capital of the world but I always make sure I stop by a few places”

“The Shark Bar has some really wonderful soul food” Johnson added.
