I’m Not Into Solid Foods Very Much

Today’s interview features the founder and lead guitarist of everyone’s favorite all-girl Zeppelin tribute band, Lez Zeppelin. Steph Paynes, a self described hater of food, also shares Jimmy Page’s classic sentiment about eating on the road, which is the title of this post.

“No one really cooked much in my house. Simple things, nothing too fancy. My mom had a couple of things she used to make that were really good. She made pot roast, breaded veal cutlets, very simple stuff. Nobody fusses much about cooking, it doesn’t loom large in my universe”.

Food on the road

“It’s a running joke about eating on the road. We’ve had some great experiences, but by and large it’s pretty bad. [Laughs]. It’s pretty limited. It’s challenging to be on the road this much and not get stuck with fast food all the time. That’s pretty much what you’ve got. You’re travelling late, you’re in the middle of nowhere, and you’re at a truck stop. How do you manage to eat healthily like that – its very difficult. If you’re the kind of person who likes Hamburgers, McDonalds, Wendys, chances are you’ll be stuffing yourself with that.”

A Restaurant or Two

There is this great place in New Orleans, Mulate’s. We were there for a couple of days last spring and we just kept hitting up this same place it was that good. Its home-style Cajun, fantastic food. Also, in Chicago there was this place, Catch, a fantastic seafood restaurant.

Singing in the Sunshine, Laughing in the rain

“I met meet John Paul Jones when I went to the reunion gig in London. It was the only time I’ve seen Led Zeppelin and it was an out of body experience. I was watching Jimmy and I was like, “Wait a minute! That’s my job!”. It was really something to be there. I think the audience was stunned, half-shocked. I actually saw Dave Grohl backstage. Actually, it was at some after party. He has gone to play with John Paul Jones [in the super group, Them Crooked Vultures]. Dave’s dream was to play with Zeppelin. [After the reunion show] he was just like, “Wasn’t that weird? Wasn’t that just weird?” He was so out of it. A lot of people in the audience were too.”

Did I mention that I hate food?

“We were in this one place in Cleveland. I didn’t want to eat at all. I wanted to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and spend the time there. I was in this restaurant and I got this terrible croissant with tuna fish on it. It was so bad. Everyone looked at it and said “Ughhh”. I sent it back and asked them to warm it up or put the tuna on the side. They bring it back and it’s still disgusting. It was burned or something. By now, I don’t even want to sit there anymore. I’m completely frustrated. They of course hate me and have probably spit on the food. They bring it back. I pushed it away and I was just like “Fuck eating!” It was really beautiful.”

The Unexpected Chef

“There’s only one thing that I cook. Its once a year. English Christmas. Roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, brussels sprouts, roasted potatoes. I do the whole thing. Sometimes it’s a turkey, sometimes a roast. Its not hard stuff to make, but its hard to do at the same time. Usually I emerge with a few burns, various injuries after doing it. Nobody can believe that I’ve cooked it.”

Steph and the girls are currently rehearsing for their upcoming tour, “delving deeper and deeper into the bottomless pit that is Led Zeppelin”. Playing almost 150 gigs a year, you should definitely check their tour schedule here.
